I’m much more likely to spill a spontaneous “Oh my God” in a near perfect Bob Belcher these days or a “Bah-gah” in Linda’s East Coast vernacular. Another 10 years has slipped by (more or less) and I’ve managed to strip the Ace Ventura speak from my lexicon (more or less). Lady Zedd will confirm - these are the lesser evils that have escaped my lips but still… yikes, I was embarrassed.

I’ve heard those zingers pop out of my mouth thousands of times over the years and had no recollection of where I’d picked them up.

If I’m not back in 5 minutes, wait longer - Holy testicle Tuesday - Yes Satan? - alrighty then and naturally, Loo-hoo-zuh-her! I also began to notice a rather embarrassing, inconvenient truth… for only having seen the film once in 1994, I sure “borrowed” an awful lot of the snappy wit (well, I didn’t but my brain sure did). I wasn’t wrong in doing so, she loved the film and I sat through our first viewing rolling my eyes and groaning at the cringe flowing across the living room television screen. I was shocked when I found myself buying Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. I wanted to extend the sweet and silly pre-teen days as long as I could.

If you’ve had kids you know well, when the light of innocently silly begins to dim in your child’s eyes, it never really comes back - the verbal fangs nature provides in the next phase of their evolution are designed specifically to sever the close paternal bond… the full understanding of what teenagers become can catch the unwary right between the eyes. A good 15+ years later my young teen had fallen in love with zany, crazy, downright silly movies and in a rush to meet the demand, I bought every title I could think of. Lady Zedd and I first saw it at the theater - frenetic buffoonery has never been my thing so comedians such as Jim Carrey were just out. Keep it in mind, I’ll come back to this in a minute. Saying “I” isn’t quite accurate, it’s more like my brain. So let me come clean right here and now - I have a most regrettable habit of picking up dialog or sounds that I find funny and pathologically repeat them. Alrighty then, I thought to myself, wouldn’t that just serve as one seriously messed up ying-yang, zig-zag, double feature, bookend to last nights slow march of zookeeper related atrocities. I was looking down the side of the stairs this morning (we use the space between balusters as owned, previous watched films shelf space - not to be confused with the bookcase set aside for owned, new films space) and spied Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which had been brought down from the media room last week and was promptly forgotten. After sitting quietly, patiently through The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017) last night, I couldn’t help but notice the thematic pastiche, the intertextuality of these two movies - the gentle, subtle laying down of leifmotif… I’m sorry but it just seems obvious - I’m calling it - The Zookeeper’s Wife is the clear the spiritual successor of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
